Posted Date: 09/18/25 (07:00 AM)

Brighton High School English teacher Colleen Hall was named a finalist for the 2026 New York State Teacher of the Year honor on Sept. 9. Each year, New York selects a teacher whose passion for teaching, involvement in their community, and impact on their school’s culture far exceeds expectations.

Mrs. Hall’s nominators included Superintendent Dr. Kevin McGowan and Assistant Principal for Aspire Alternative Education Programs at Twelve Corners Middle School and Brighton High School Betsy Paddock.

“As both a superintendent and a parent of a former student, I am incredibly proud to see Colleen recognized as a finalist for New York State Teacher of the Year,” Dr. McGowan said. “Her passion for her students is unmistakable and her enthusiasm in the classroom is contagious. She is a dynamic educator who consistently delivers engaging, thought-provoking instruction that inspires not only her students but also her colleagues. Colleen sets a standard of excellence, serving as a model for teachers across our district and beyond. This recognition is a true reflection of the dedication and heart she brings to her work every single day.”

Mrs. Hall, who is in her 27th year in Brighton, teaches AP English Literature as well as 10th and 11th grade English. One of her 10th grade classes is with BHS’ Aspire program, which is for students who have difficulty navigating a larger school environment due to emotional stressors that interfere with their ability to attend school.

“Colleen has an exceptional ability to connect with her students and meets them wherever they are,” Mrs. Paddock said. “She employs trauma-informed strategies that create a warm and welcoming environment, where all learners feel safe and valued. Her classroom is a space where academic growth and emotional well-being are equally prioritized, fostering resilience and confidence in her students.”

The Teacher of the Year application process consists of four rounds, including initial application review, response question review, site visits, and in-person interviews. The New York State Teacher of the Year Advisory Council is responsible for selecting the Teacher of the Year, as well as one or more finalists.

The Teacher of the Year is Prince Johnson from New York City Public Schools. The other finalists are Nicole Greene from Scarsdale Public Schools, Betty Haynes from Cleveland Hill Union Free School District, and Lisa Egan from Yonkers Public Schools.

 Congratulations, Mrs. Hall!
