Community Approves 2016-17 School Budget

Residents of the Brighton Central School District approved a $74,017,525 budget for the 2016-17 school year by a vote of 1,199 to 247. The budget received an 82.9% “yes” vote, the second highest passage rate since 1971-72.

The projected tax levy increase for 2016-17 is 0.34%.

Voters also elected two members to the Board of Education: Andrea Costanza and Karen Hatch. They ran unopposed.

Two propositions were also on the ballot. The propositions authorize expenditures from existing reserve funds, and their approval does not increase the budget or tax rate. The first proposal, approved 1,250 to 166, authorized the withdrawal of $1,500,000 for capital projects to include:  Structural repairs at Council Rock Primary School; replacement of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment at Council Rock Primary School and the Administration Building; rehabilitation of the pool at Brighton High School; structural foundation repairs at Brighton High School and rehabilitation of the tennis courts; renovation of the Twelve Corners Middle School cafeteria area including the purchase and installation of equipment necessary for the preparation, service, and storage of food, for proper ventilation, and to comply with fire safety regulations; purchase and installation of an oil separator at the Brighton High School Grounds Building; and purchase and installation of safety equipment districtwide. 

The second proposition, approved 1,254 to 214, authorized the transfer of $500,000 from the Capital Reserve Fund (Technology) to the District’s General Operating Fund and to expend this sum from the District’s General Operating Fund for computer-related equipment and software in accordance with the purposes set forth in the authorizing resolution establishing this fund.
